The traffic through mobiles accumulates 50.3% of the total in the electronic commerce

Last week came an event worthy of recognition: for the first time in history, more people used their phones and tablets, instead of opening a computer to visit online stores. Observing data from more than 100,000 online stores using the Shopify platform, we witnessed that 50.3% of traffic came from mobile devices (40.3% of mobile phones, 10% tablets) and only 49.7% of computers.

We have been watching and
talking on mobile commerce or m-commerce for years, but there is no doubt mobile commerce is the way in which people are buying online.

The booming traffic to online shopping via mobile is being driven in part by the general trend that social media are becoming an important marketing channel.
For example, while Facebook accounts for less than 5% of traffic to a virtual store on a computer, that number increases to 7% when given through mobile phones. In comparison, the data show that Google represents 18% of traffic from a computer, compared to 12% through mobile phones. These data seem to show that computers are being used to search for commodities, while social and mobile networks are used to buy more spontaneous, based on daily discoveries.

The increase in purchases through mobile also provides another trend called “always shopping.”
Traffic through computers for e – commerce sites traditionally peaked between Monday and Friday, decreasing during the weekend. Mobile traffic has an opposite behavior as shoppers use their phones during weekends. So when you combine mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and computer traffic, with a virtual store and show no peaks when people shop online. In other words, shopping is no longer something that people are preferring, it is something they are always doing.

A few years ago, we
began to notice the increase in purchases through mobile and drastically change the way we operate in Shopify. We acquired a company that develops mobile applications, launching two applications for iOS (
mobile Shopify and Shopify POS ) as well as a section optimized for mobile phone payments, and review the issues of the online store are compatible for various devices. In September, we will launch a new method for fully customizable shopping, with topics that respond better to the devices and the beta version of Shopify Mobile for Android .

In addition, we
began working closely with one of the leading providers of mobile operating systems in order to try to address a deficiency which currently offers mobile telephony: the conversion rate and ROI. While most traffic an online store comes from mobile devices, most purchases are still being made by computers. This is because the introduction of credit card data and personal information on a small screen causes more conflict. We believe this is an easy issue to solve.

Similarly, we
began to work closely with leading social networks to reinforce the trend of buying through mobile devices based on the discovery that these devices will soon be the biggest driver of traffic and the greatest opportunity for marketing strategy applied in small and medium businesses who want to sell their products online.   

Despite the rapid growth of mobile commerce, I think we’re still in its
infancy. And I’m looking forward to playing Shopify soon be one of the most important roles of their existence.

Conclusion: With mobile we are now always in “buy mode”.
No matter the day and time, and no matter we are surfing the web or socializing within Facebook, thanks to mobile devices (or their fault, depending on how you look at it ) we are now always predisposed to buy.
